What it solves
Multi-agent research is usually read about rather than watched. Polis is the watchable version: five model-driven citizens, a mayor, a trader, a farmer, a researcher and an artist, living in a small town, making decisions, negotiating, failing and learning.
How it works
The name is the design brief. A polis in the Greek sense was never the architecture, it was the city as a body of citizens, a community that exists for the good life and is formed by many voices rather than one plan. So the simulation models the voices negotiating between the walls, not the layout of the walls. It sits in a line of published work: Smallville from Stanford, Voyager from NVIDIA, GovSim from ETH Zurich, AgentVerse from Tsinghua and Project Sid.
When to use it
It is a showcase and a study object. Take it if you want to see emergent behaviour in a small society rather than read a description of it, or if you want a running starting point for your own experiment with agent roles that have conflicting interests.
When not to use it
It is a simulation, not a product and not evidence about the real world. Nothing a citizen decides here transfers to a claim about people, markets or governance. Read it as a sandbox for observing interaction between agents, which is exactly how the papers it follows read themselves.
